How Safe Is Vaping?

Within the past decade, vaping has exploded in popularity. Some of the most popular cannabis products are vape pens.

Their popularity comes from their ease of use and how stealthy they are. Today, there are many different types of vaporizers and various kinds of cannabis products to vape.

Another reason why vaping has become so popular is that people believe vaping is safer and healthier than smoking cannabis. However, how safe is vaping really?

Join us as we take an in-depth look at the safety of vaping.

Safety of Vaping Whole Flower

vaporizer for flower

Before vape pens became a thing, vaping referred to vaporizing dry flower, using devices like the Volcano, Pax, and other portable or stationary vaporizers.

The concept around whole flower vaporizers is the ability to smoke cannabis without combusting it. Normally, if you smoke cannabis, you're lighting the weed on fire. The intense heat from the fire basically explodes the plant matter. That leads to the creation of potentially carcinogenic compounds to go straight into your lungs.

With vaping, you're heating the cannabis to a predetermined temperature—usually around 220°F. That temperature is right around where cannabinoids and terpenes begin to vaporize.

That means that you should only be inhaling cannabinoids and terpenes—leading to a much cleaner and healthier experience. Research seems to agree that vaporizing dry flower is indeed much healthier than smoking it.

How Many Hits Should I Take From a Dry Herb Vaporizer?

Using a dry herb vaporizer is slightly more potent than smoking. Most people vape a little less or as much as they do when smoking cannabis.

Safety of Vaping Concentrates

One of the most common methods of vaporizing concentrates is through dabbing. Dabbing is a method of smoking concentrates through a superheated nail in a dab rig.

Concentrates that are often dabbed are:

● Shatters

● Wax

● Butane hash oil (BHO)

● Rosin

● Hash

● Crumble

Concentrates are much more potent than flower, and some can contain up to 90% THC content. However, it's not the incredibly high THC content that can be bad for your health. In concentrates, chemicals like butane or CO2 are used for cannabinoid extraction. If some of these chemicals are leftover in the final product, they can cause lung damage.

How Many Dabs Can I Take?

Since concentrates are so powerful, people typically dab a few times per day. Just make sure to buy professionally made concentrates that have been lab-tested to guarantee their safety.

Safety of THC Oil and Pre-Filled Cartridges

THC oil and pre-filled cartridges are what you find attached to most battery-operated vapes. Much like an e-cigarette, the top part of a vape is filled with a THC-rich oil.

There's been a lot of controversy surrounding THC-filled vape pens lately. In 2019, THC vape oil was linked to at least 50 deaths and thousands of hospitalizations. It turns out that many black-market manufacturers were adding a compound called Vitamin E acetate as a cutting agent. When vaporized, vitamin E acetate causes a condition known as vaping-associated pulmonary injury (VAPI).

However, that doesn't mean all pre-filled vapes or THC oils are dangerous. So long as the THC oil was professionally made, lab-tested, and doesn't have any extra chemicals, it should be safe to consume.

How Many Hits Should I Take From a Pre-Filled Cartridge?

Since THC distillate can be up to 90% THC, most people will take a few puffs throughout the day. However, not every cartridge is super powerful, and some people will continually vape all day.

Safety of Vaping CBD

In tincture form, the safety of CBD is well-known, but what about vaping it? Much like THC oil, CBD oil is made as a distillate, meaning it's nearly pure CBD in a vape cartridge.

So long as the CBD distillate is produced professionally and tested, it is safe to vape. Avoid any CBD vape that has added chemicals and doesn't have certifiable lab results.

How Many Hits Should I Take From a CBD Distillate?

Since CBD is for therapeutic purposes, take as many hits as necessary. However, a few good puffs from a high-quality CBD distillate should do the trick for at least a few hours.

Safety of Vaping Delta-8 THC

Delta-8 THC is getting more and more popular because it's like THC light. It offers all the therapeutic properties of THC without the overwhelming high. However, Delta-8 THC is typically produced by converting from CBD using toxic chemicals. Like all other vaping oils, you'll need verifiable lab results to ensure the product you purchase is clear of any leftover chemicals.

How Many Hits Should I Take From a Delta-8 THC Vape?

A few solid puffs should provide a rounded-out buzz for the next few hours. Some users claim that if they vape a lot of Delta-8 THC, it makes them feel just as high as a typical THC oil cartridge.

Vaping Concentrates Can Be Risky

Vaporizing dry flower is probably the safest way to vape. Vaping concentrates carry some risk because of the way they're produced. However, if you purchase legitimate concentrates from reputable companies, you should be safe. To ensure your health and safety, never buy concentrates or vape cartridges from illicit sources.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Vape?

According to federal law, the minimum legal age to buy any vape product in all states is 21. However, prior to 2019, each state set its own age minimum, which have not all been updated to correspond to the Federal requirement. Before the new vaping act of 2019, the federal minimum age was 18. This was followed by a total of 31 states, with the other 19 states requiring ages of 19 or 21 years. So today, some states still only require a minimum age of 18 to vape or to buy vape products.

Since federal law requires a minimum of 21 years of age to vape, technically that applies to every state as well. Still, it's not quite that straightforward. State and local law enforcement agencies don't actively adhere to federal laws, and federal agents aren't likely to pursue these types of cases, so the state's laws are what matter most.
