Medium-Chain Triglyceride (better known as MCT) oil is typically extracted from coconut oil. Medium-Chain Triglycerides represent more than 50% of the fat found in coconut oil, making it the perfect source. Since MCTs are easily digested by the body and offer many health benefits, they've become a popular supplement.
The same goes for cannabidiol, or CBD, which has certainly been making headlines in recent years. CBD is derived from the hemp plant and, while commonly associated with marijuana, CBD contains no THC or psychoactive properties and it has been shown to offer a number of benefits of its own.
Aids In Weight Loss
MCT oil has been shown to help people lose weight, especially when participants consumed C8 and C10. That’s because MCTs work within the body to help your systems process fat. Consuming MCT oil as a supplement could help you burn fat and calories, regardless of the diet you are following.
By creating ketones, MCT helps to increase your metabolic rate (your metabolism) and assist your body in burning stored fat. Meanwhile, although research into CBD is just beginning, preliminary research has already revealed promising results, like CBD's ability to suppress appetite and help you eat less overall.
Many proponents of MCT oil have dubbed it a “super fuel,” since your body is able to absorb MCTs very quickly. The body is actually able to absorb MCTs much faster than LCTs, or long-chain triglycerides. That’s because LCTs contain more carbons in their fatty acid chains. Due to their shorter chain length, MCTs are able to travel directly from the gut to the liver. Unlike LCTs, they don’t require bile to be broken down.
Once in the liver, MCTs are broken down to be used as fuel. They’re able to enter your cells without your body having to break them down, which allows them to be used as an immediate energy source. MCTs can also be converted into ketones, which can pass through the blood-brain barrier and be used as energy for your brain cells.
CBD is also able to boost energy because it acts as a natural stimulant. By helping you to sustain energy throughout your day, CBD can prevent the jitters and crashes that come with other energy sources like caffeine. Taking MCT and CBD can also help reduce lactic acid buildup during exercise, which can help you get more done throughout the day.
Boosts Your Brain Health
Both CBD and MCT have proven effective for promoting better focus, clarity of mind, and improved brain health overall. Studies have shown that taking these supplements can help manage conditions like autism, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease.
CBD is capable of alleviating mood disorders as well, assisting people with both anxiety and depression by helping balance out hormonal imbalances. This is because of how CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Maintaining healthy levels of cannabinoids is important to keep your body's systems in balance.
Fights Yeast and Bacterial Growth
When you take a supplement like MCT, you are giving your body extra antimicrobial and antifungal powers. Studies done using coconut oil, which contains large amounts of MCTs, have shown the ability to reduce a common strand of yeast known as Candida albicans, which is responsible for various skin infections and thrush. This makes MCT oil a great choice for topical application as well, to prevent and treat acne.
Taking coconut oil also reduced the growth of Clostridium difficile in a test-tube study. This is likely due to the caprylic, capric, and lauric acid found in MCTs. On their own, MCTs have also been able to suppress the growth of fungus infections throughout hospitals, reducing the growth by up to 50%.
Improves Your Heart Health
Finally, yet another great benefit of CBD and MCT together comes from the heart-healthy characteristics found in both of these supplements. A study of 24 overweight men noted a reduction in total cholesterol by 12.5% over the course of 29 days. Meanwhile, olive oil only led to a 4.7% reduction in that same time period.
When adding an MCT oil mixture to the participants’ diet, the same study found even better reductions in LDL or “bad” cholesterol. Other studies have shown that MCT can also increase HDL, which is heart-protective “good” cholesterol that’s important to healthy heart function. Moreover, taking MCT can reduce CRP, which is a marker of inflammation that increases a person’s risk of suffering from heart disease.
